Passing the Torch: A Spark That Becomes a Craft

For some, welding begins as a job; for others, a childhood curiosity, putting things together, seeing how they work, and what kid doesn’t think planes are cool?

For Zack, that early fascination was the spark of a career. Beginning in a high school shop class where welding was only a small section of the curriculum. The class covered nothing more than SMAW, and the teacher wasn’t particularly knowledgeable. Still, something clicked.

“Long story short, I began teaching my fellow classmates what I figured out to make it look good."

He’ll admit he knew nothing at the time, but Zack was interested in where welding could take him; when everyone around him encouraged him to go to welding school, it was the natural next step—and he loved it.

But the story doesn’t end with discovering the trade.

“What made me stay was the ever-growing skill ceiling, the constant ability to learn more and do all sorts of cool things I’ve always wished I could do. The trades are more than just a job; it’s a skilled field that requires hard work and dedication, leading to the best relationships between those who know what it’s like.”

For Zack, welding has become more than a skill—it has become an opportunity to keep learning, challenging himself, and building relationships with people who share the same passion for the trade. Only three months into his journey at Lynn Welding, he is already proving that craftsmanship doesn't begin with knowing everything; it begins with curiosity, dedication, and a willingness to keep improving.
